Update: As of May 2019, Mailchimp’s free plan will only let you send ONE automated email upon signup (instead of a 3-part welcome series as I teach in the Challenge The MailChimp plan that includes automation is $15.99 a month.

MailerLite* is a decent free alternative. I still recommend the Bloom* plugin to create your email optin form if you use MailerLite for your email service provider. An update is coming to the Free 5 Day Website Challenge in July that will have a tutorial on MailerLite – but here’s a MailerLite Tutorial I created for my Website Marketing Lab Students in the meantime.

If it’s in your budget, I still highly recommend ConvertKit* over MailerLite or MailChimp.
