MINI-COURSE

Lesson 2 – Marketing 101👇🏻

I’m going to break down what marketing is (but more importantly, what it isn’t).

You’ll also learn the mistakes most people make when they are just starting out (so that you can avoid them).

But before we dive in to Marketing 101, yesterday, I gave you a couple of action items:

  • Action Item #1: Write down your #1 goal.
  • Action Item #2: Clearly articulate your why.

If you didn’t write down your WHAT and WHY yesterday, take 5 minutes to print the worksheets and do that now.

Go ahead. I’ll wait on you.

..

.

Ok.

Now you’re super clear on what you want and why you want it…

  • “More time to spend with my family be able to travel and work from anywhere.”
  • “More freedom to do work that I enjoy”
  • “More money so my partner can quit their job and we can start our family”
  • “More control over my future (instead of my boss dictating it)”
  • “More income so my family can be debt-free”

The big question is – how can you actually achieve the goal that you’ve set?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received on reaching massive life-changing goals occurred in my lifelong journey to lose weight.

When I started my side hustle, I was 30lbs overweight. I was determined to make it work so that I could quit my day job because I kept having this thought… “If I just had more time, I’d be able to go to the gym, blah blah blah…”

Four years later (and one whole year AFTER I quit my day job) I was 50lbs overweight. I totally in control of my time and still not using it to do the things I’d said I really wanted.

“Why???” It was so frustrating!!! “I know how to get $h*t done, why am I not doing what I know I should be doing???”

And then I heard something (on a podcast) that changed everything:

“If you don’t truly believe that achieving your goal is possible, you’ll never do the work required to reach it.”

Mind. Blown.

The EXACT same thing is true in your business.

I always believed my business would be successful and that someday I’d quit my day job. So when it got hard, I pivoted. When it took longer than I wanted to, I didn’t quit. I made it happen.

But I never truly believed that I could lose weight. I’d been overweight my whole life. I’d never lost more than 15 pounds (with crazypants diets that I’d never been able to stay on) and always gained it back.

Not only did I NOT believe it was possible, I didn’t have a compelling reason WHY I should experience the discomfort of losing weight.

So on the advice of that same podcast, I wrote down about 20 reasons WHY I wanted to lose weight.

And this next part is key…

In order to get yourself to actually take action when you don’t believe you can get the result, you just have to act as if the result is possible.

Like, if your success were a foregone conclusion, there was zero doubt that it would work, you would do these things every day to reach your goal.

So I just started doing what the podcast told me to do, even though deep down I didn’t really think it would work for me it didn’t seem like it’d be ENOUGH to make the scale move.

And to my surprise, it worked. And it wasn’t hard. And I’m halfway to my goal and I don’t have to act as if anymore… I now have zero doubt that I’ll get there.

So I tell you all of this to tell you this:

If you doubt that you can really have your big goal – just set that doubt aside for the rest of this course, okay?

And use your “WHY” to propel you while you take the kind of action you need to take.

Because you are NOT going to reach your goal overnight.

There is nothing I can teach you that’s going to have you making six figures or saying “peace out ✌” to your boss as fast as you want to.

It’s going to take time. Pivots. Pretending you believe when you don’t.

And making lots of mistakes.

Because making mistakes means you’re actually doing something.

Which means you either believe in yourself enough to take action, or you’re acting as if you believe and you’re taking action.

Both are good enough to get you to your goal.

……..

👉🏻So all of that leads me to today’s lesson, “Marketing 101”

I’ve asked thousands of people to tell me the #1 thing they struggle with when it comes to growing their business that their answer is overwhelmingly:

“Getting found online.”

And it’s not like they’re not trying!

  • They built a website (or hired someone to build it for them).
  • They’re writing blog posts and posting them on their social media accounts.
  • They’ve gotten a green light in Yoast SEO for good use of keywords and formatting in their blog posts and they submitted their websites to Google.
  • They might have even dropped a bunch of cash on Facebook Ads….

But the traffic isn’t coming.

And they’re frustrated.

And I get it.

They’re frustrated because they think they’re spending all this time and effort on MARKETING and it’s not working.

But here’s what they don’t understand:

They’re not actually marketing.

They’re just… creating content and publishing it online.

That’s not marketing.

Marketing is NOT creating content, publishing it online and waiting for people to find it.

Marketing is:

  • Knowing exactly who your ideal client is
  • Knowing exactly what they want and need
  • Finding them online
  • Getting their attention with great content that compels them to visit your website
  • Building the level of trust required to get them to give you their money
  • Giving them all of the information they need to make the best decision for themself about whether or not to buy from you.

So asking “How do I get found online?” is the wrong question.

The question you should be asking is “How do I find my ideal clients online?”

It’s your job to do the searching, not theirs.

It’s the “knowing what they want and need” and “finding them online” and “building trust” parts that most people skip.

And it’s not because they’re lazy, they just don’t know what they don’t know.

That’s why I’m glad you’re taking this mini-course.

By the end of Lesson 6, you’ll know exactly what you need to know to find your ideal client online, get their attention, build trust + turn them into a customer.

And marketing requires PATIENCE + MASSIVE ACTION on your part.

We’ll be getting to the ACTIONS soon enough…

But before I even let you get started on the ACTIONS – I need you to either believe you can have your goal, or act as if you believe it – so that you’ll actually do what’s going to be required of you to market yourself.

Otherwise, you’ll be like “Screw this, it’s taking too long. I thought we were jumpstarting! Where’s my overnight traffic explosion? I’m gonna go run some Facebook ads…

You want to keep it running once you jumpstart it, don’t you? Then I need you to be patient and hang with me.

Your action items for today are…

Action Item #1: Print page 4 of your workbook (Lesson 2)

Under “I believe I can…” write down your big goal (i.e. Make $10K a month and quit my day job.)

Read it out loud. Do you really believe it? If the answer is yes, well, congratulations. You’re going to get it someday.

If you don’t believe it yet, that’s okay. Do this:

Below it, I want you to write, “I’m willing to believe that it’s possible that I can…(make $10K a month and quit my day job.)” Then read it out loud.

Do you believe that statement? If you believe that statement, you’re good to go. Someday you’ll believe the first one too and then you’ll be on your way!

Action Item #2: Tape that piece of paper somewhere that you’ll see it every day, and read it aloud every. single.day.

……..

Your goal should be your guide.

Every time you sleep in on the weekend.

Every time you waste 2 hours scrolling Instagram…

Every time you do more “research” instead of taking action…

Your goal will be staring you in the face and asking you, “Why aren’t you spending time working on me instead of doing whatever else you’re doing?”

In the next lesson I’m going to give you a strategy that will help you get the attention of ideal client online (and get them to bring you more people just like them).
