Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to D I Y visual marketing for online business owners in this training, you're going to learn the five-part formula for growing your online business through graphic design, even if you're not a designer. So it's likely if you're here, we probably haven't met yet. So hi, I'm Kristin. I am from applecart lane.com. I am a designer, mom of three, and I live in the mitten state, AKA, Michigan. I love to teach online business owners and entrepreneurs, how to DIY their own graphics that look professional and unique, create a magnetic brand that attracts their dream viewers, and that ultimately gives them the confidence they need to market themselves online. So before we get started in this training, there's one thing that you need to know a cohesive brand, consistent graphics and good design is essential for marketing your online business, a cohesive visual brand sets the tone and vibe of your business while building familiarity and trust with just the right people, AKA your dream viewers.
Speaker 1: It is literally your first introduction to the online world. Just as if you were walking in to the storefront of a brand new store, your visual marketing is the first interaction that your viewers get with your business. So it's super important to nail it. Consistent graphics will amplify your visibility and help your audience recognize. And remember you, when they interact with you online, there are hundreds of thousands of people begging for attention online, and it is so very important for you to stand out with consistent graphics. It's going to improve the overall quality of your designs. And it's going to save you tons of time in the design process. Now let's move on to graphic design. So good graphic design will help you look like an expert in your niche and represent the professional behind your content. That's you. We all have amazing content that we are trying to market online.
Speaker 1: And the last thing that you want is to have your awesome content hidden by lackluster graphics. So when you do this right, it's going to help you break through the clutter on social media. It's going to make your marketing so much more impactful, and it's going to give your brand a higher perceived value. So as an online entrepreneur or business owner, you know that there is a lot that goes in to building your business. There's your core values in branding, your website, setting up all of your social media accounts, products, digital products, or physical products, growing your email list, and then promoting your products. One thing that is behind all of this is your graphics and visuals, graphics and visuals are at the core of all of these business building. And they are going to amplify them and give them so much more power when used in the online.
Speaker 1: So here's what you're going to learn today in this training, the first thing we're going to go over are graphic design, cliff notes. We're going to jump into creating a visual brand. Then we're going to talk about creating a beautiful and cohesive website next creating consistent social media graphics. And lastly, we're going to talk about starting and growing your email list through design. All right. So where do we start? We're going to jump right in to the graphic design cliff notes, because I fully believe that if you do not have even a basic understanding of the elements of design, you are going to struggle no matter what you are trying to create to represent your business online. First things first, your graphics need to look professional and your graphics need to look unique. When you have this, you have a winning combination. So what makes your graphics look professional?
Speaker 1: You don't have to be a designer to create professional looking graphics, but there are just a few design rules that you need to follow. People are very surprised when I tell them this, but there are just a handful of graphic design principles that you can apply to any graphic or piece of visual content that you create. And in this training, I'm going to cover the top five spark is the acronym for the set of design principles that I'm going to teach you today in this training, the first graphic design principle that we're going to talk about is spacing. In a nutshell, you want to use proper spacing when placing text and elements on your document, any social media graphic you create any lead magnet you create. You always want to make sure that the spacing is on point. I want you guys to refrain from placing elements too close to the edge of your design.
Speaker 1: Usually a quarter inch margin is safe. So here are a couple examples of using spacing wrong and right, I see this mistake all the time. So in the example, on the right, you'll notice that the elements are way too close to the edge on this design. It's going to give your viewer a uneasy feeling like these elements might just like fall right off of the edge of your design into nowhere land. So when you are designing, I want you to remember to focus on spacing. You want to keep things away from the edges and refrain from placing things way too close to each other. So in this example, I'm showing you a quarter inch margin around the edge of this design makes it look so much more professional and won't make your viewers uneasy. Proximity P stands for proximity in a nutshell elements that are related within your design should be close together, like in close proximity and then objects that are not related to one another.
Speaker 1: It should be further apart within your design. So here is it a visual example of proximity in action? In the example, on the left, I'm using a headline and a sub-headline. So as you are looking at this, you would read it like this part of your heading pause, pause, pause, pause the rest of your heading in order to have your message, be clearly read from your audience. In a matter of seconds, you need to pay attention to the proximity of the elements and texts and your designs on the right example. Here we have part of your heading the rest of your heading. Do you see how the flow of the message is so much more clear, even in this simple example, and it's all has to do with where your elements are placed on the document. So always keep proximity in mind when you are designing anything for your online business.
Speaker 1: The third design principle is alignment. This is the a InSpark alignment. This one is pretty simple, but I see this mistake all of the time. It's very easy to make if you're not paying attention to it, but it's also very easy to fix when you know about it. And you're able to be aware of the alignment in your documents. So simply put all elements within your layout should be aligned properly. You can align elements to the left side of your document, to the right of your document or directly in the center of, of a layout or document. So alignment is going to keep your graphic organized and balanced, and really can create a visual connections within your design when things are not aligned in your graphics, your viewers have a tendency to feel a little bit uneasy. That is exactly the opposite of how we want them to feel.
Speaker 1: So in this next example, I'm going to show you an example of improper use of alignment. That is the example on the left. As you can see with the line that I have placed over top of the image, the alignment in these tech text blocks are just off just a little bit, but it has a, a big tendency to throw off the entire design. Now, moving on to the right example, everything is properly aligned down the center. Now I will say center alignment is going to be your safest bet for getting started. As you DIY your own graphics, as you become a little bit more comfortable creating graphics, you can play around with left aligning things or right aligning things, um, or even using some mixed alignment within your designs. But the alignment really depends on the, the image that you are using and the other, other elements around the text or graphics that you are aligning.
Speaker 1: So if you're just getting started, I recommend starting with the simplest form of alignment, which is center align. The next design principle in spark is repetition and repetition is going to show up in multiple places across your graphic design and visual content creation. But in a nutshell, all of your graphics and visual content should look like it all belongs together. Kind of like a big happy family use the same colors, fonts, elements, and design styles throughout everything you design. It took your create a consistent visual brand. Here is an example of repetition from one of my fellow online business owners. And as you can see, when all of these images are placed side by side, you can tell that they all belong to the same website, the same online business. We have the same colors that are being used through all of the graphics, the same fonts, and overall the same design styles are used through every graphic that is created for this online business.
Speaker 1: Lastly, we have contrast, so contrast is super important and it is basically the difference between two or more elements in a design. I'm sure you guys have heard the word contrast before. So when applied to graphic design, using contrast is going to help organize your design and it's going to help your viewers determine the most important part of your message. So think about when you are browsing online on your favorite social media website, or even on a website, you are looking for something to catch your eye and when something catches your eye, you immediately are drawn to it. And then from there you determine whether you want to learn more. Okay. So contrast is responsible for grabbing your dream viewers attention and helping them navigate your message in a way that gets them to convert and gets them really interested in what it is that you have to offer.
Speaker 1: So here is an example in some Pinterest pins that I've created. And as you can see, when you look through these pins, I've used things like color size fonts, spacing to get my viewers, to look exactly where I want them to look on the pin. So in the first image, the first thing we see is harvest peas. The next image, I see home nursery meal planning, easy, simple trick. The last image we have colic newborn. So I've used different things. Again, color size, different funds, different spacing within these layouts to create contrast that is going to help my viewers see exactly what it is that I have to offer, and then help them determine whether or not they want to learn more about my content. Okay. So now that we've covered the five main principles of graphic design that are going to give you the biggest impact in the, the spark method.
Speaker 1: Let's talk about what makes a graphic look unique. So the ordinary design techniques can go a long way in helping your graphics stand out in the crowd, and you don't have to be a creative genius to do it. So here are a few examples of some super simple but effective, unique design tips that you can use on your own graphics. So we can add a block of color behind text thin shapes. Beneath text is fun too, or this is contrast in action here. You can choose some words to make them pop. All of these are super simple to do in any design program that you're using. You can also do things like change the opacity of a shape. As you can see, I've taken a simple circle and a rectangle, the two most basic shapes there ever were and combine them I've changed the opacity and layered them in a way to make an interesting layout.
Speaker 1: Also, in the second example, I just am using different rectangle and shades of blue and layering them in a way that makes it interesting to look at pretty nifty. Huh. So here are a couple other designs. I did not create these. These are, um, pins that I found on Pinterest, but they were really good examples of just implementing these unique design techniques to help your graphics stand out on Pinterest, Facebook on any social media platform that you are on. Um, so we, we can use an abstract shape. This is just a rectangle and it's, it's angled in a way that gives the design a little more pizazz layering text is also super simple, um, design technique to use in your graphics. You can use different shapes in this example on the right, we have a little brush squash, that's going behind the text to draw attention to that specific word on the pin image.
Speaker 1: And then you can also use fun elements, like little doodles or wiggles or squiggles, or, you know, just anything that's going to make your brand stand out in the overwhelming world of online business. Here are a couple more examples, super simple. Again, you guys can apply these to your own graphics that you create, and I really encourage you to do that. We have a gradient overlay. Um, this gives your image just a fancier look than just having a block of color or, you know, text on an image. You can play around with texts and have fun with it. We have 25 companies that send you products to test for free super eye-catching, big number 25, and everything is justified. So once everything is justified, that means it's spanning from left to right. Okay. It's going to fill that whole entire space again, super simple design technique that you can use.
Speaker 1: And then one, my favorites are using photos of you on your Pinterest images, social media graphics website. I'm going to dig into this a little bit later in the training, but these are all unique design techniques that you can apply to your own graphics. And you don't have to be a creative genius to do these things. Okay? So now that we know the basics of graphic design and then how to make your graphics look unique, let's talk about my next favorite thing, which is creating a visual brand, a cohesive brand builds trust while helping you be recognized and remembered. It's your first introduction to the online world. I've already used the example of walking in to your favorite storefront and you know, how you feel and how you interact with that store. Your online business is no different. And your visual branding is oftentimes the very first interaction somebody has with you online.
Speaker 1: So you better make it amazing visual branding is made up of colors, fonts, images, styles, and design elements that help differentiate your brand and you, and attract your ideal customers. Essentially, it's going to set the vibe and tone of your message and helps people relate to you and your brand. So let's talk about how to DIY your visual brand, because I hear a lot of people think that branding is some, you know, extravagant process that, you know, they're not, they don't deserve, or, you know, they're not big enough to be, you know, to have a brand. And all of these are lies. There is never a better time to brand yourself online than right now. So it's super simple. You guys, when you break it down, visual branding does not have to be difficult on a basic level. You're going to have a color palette, font, combinations, imagery, and stock photos.
Speaker 1: You're going to have your logo or simple text URL, and then some design styles and layouts that you can use for your graphics and visual content. So on a more advanced level, once you nail these basic things, your colors, your fonts or images, you can start adding in things like patterns and textures and other graphic elements to your layouts. All right? So let's kind of dig in and uncover the process that you might walk through as you create your DIY visual brand. So the first thing that you're going to want to do is create a color palette and your color palette. You're going to want to include three to four colors plus black and way. I always tell everybody that those are freebies, black and white are freebies. Those don't count. Yay. And you're going to use these colors on all of your graphics and visual content.
Speaker 1: The colors that you shoot choose should support the tone and vibe of your brand, how you want your viewers to feel when they interact with you. The next thing is you're going to want to settle on some funds. Your visual brand should consist of about two to three fonts that you will use on your graphics. And I want you to stick to them using the same fonts will help your viewers start to recognize your visual marketing, no matter what platform you are showing up on. I recommend using a very readable sand Sarah font. That's a font without the little feet hanging, um, pair that font with a font with some personality, maybe like a handwritten font or a display font. So here are a couple of examples of some font combinations that I've put together to show you exactly what I'm talking about here. The next thing you're gonna want to do is find some, go to stock photos.
Speaker 1: So find a set or two of stock photo bundles that mesh well with your chosen colors and funds. They should be images that your ideal client would be drawn to and connect with surprise, surprise. So images have this magical way of attracting your dream viewers. Okay. So I recommend styled stack. I think that styled stack images are one of the best kind of images to use throughout your visual content, because it's almost as if they were created specifically for online business and, you know, visual marketing. And I just, I love them so much. My two favorite places to get stock photos from are ivory mixed.com and pixie stock.com. You're going to find just about any kind of stock photo bundle that you're going to need to grow your business through visual marketing. Okay. So this is what a visual brand can look like from a bird's eye view.
Speaker 1: These are my mix and match brand kits. Okay. But they're, they're just a really good example of how a visual brand can all fit together. So we have a color palette. Um, we have a logo, so in my mix and match brand kits, I offer a few different logo options, but any of these would do any combination of these would work. Typically you're going to want one vertical logo, um, a horizontal logo, and then a logo Mark, um, like a little icon that you can use, um, on your website or across different social media accounts, font combinations. So any of these combinations would do for any of these brands and then stock photos. So do you guys see how in each of these different brand kits, all of this just compiles on top of each other and adds to each other, the colors, the logo, the font combos, the stock photos, everything is just playing very well together.
Speaker 1: They all have their own unique vibe and tone, and it really just sets the scene for how you want your viewers to interact with you. And you want them to feel about you as they find you and interact with you online. So I saved the best part for last, not only will you look amazing and amplify your know like trust factor, but you are going to save yourself tons of time, creating graphics when everything is pre decided for you. When you have your fonts and your colors and your stock photos, all already decided creating graphics and visual content is so fast and such a breeze. And it's actually a lot of fun because you're not reinventing the wheel every time you're not looking for your next font. You're not looking for another color to use. You're not going down the rabbit hole of a fence.
Speaker 1: I mean, let me know in the comments, if you have spent way too many minutes or hours searching for a font to use or searching for a color palette. So when you have a visual brand, you don't need to worry about any of that. You're going to cut all of that time out and your design time is going to be dramatically decrease, and you're going to be able to create graphics so fast and so simple, and you're going to have so much fun doing it. Okay. So let's move into creating a beautiful and cohesive website. Consistency is key in creating a website that flows smoothly from page to page, use your visual branding to create a streamlined design. I'm sure share. You are not surprised to hear that. I know that designing graphics for your website can be so overwhelming unless you fully understand what images you'll need and where to use them on your website.
Speaker 1: One of the most important images that you are going to need for your website is a header image. Your header image is typically used on the homepage of your website, and it is the perfect space for you to introduce yourself to your audience and let them know exactly what you offer and how you can help them bonus points. If you are the star of the show, I know you're thinking, Oh my gosh, I don't want to put a picture of myself on my homepage, on my website, but doing this is going to really connect your audience with you on a more personal level. And all of that's just going to amplify that know like, and trust factor. I'm sure everyone here has heard about the next you're going to have a fancy about photo. I recommend having a professional headshot image be in your element.
Speaker 1: If you are a fitness coach, maybe you are in your workout gear with a set of weights. Or if you are a mindset coach, maybe you are, you know, just looking all calm and relaxed in a special place. If you are a Baker, maybe you're in your kitchen with baking supplies, whatever you are just be in your element. This is going to help people really relate to you. And then lastly, make eye contact to really connect with your website. Visitors. Another very important set of images are your blog, post images, AKA your featured images. If you are creating the log articles on your website to use for content marketing, you're going to need some awesome blog, post images. They can also be used on your home page, your blog road, roll page and blog post page. They work best when you have a few layouts to choose from.
Speaker 1: As you can see in the examples on the right-hand side, all of these images, they fit very well together. They all have the same fonts and colors and stock photos. Remember visual branding is so, so important as you create anything for your website or your social media, but you have a little variation of things to work with. So you're not always using the same layout every single time. So here's the four examples of a blog post, a featured image layouts that you can use for your own inspiration. Lastly, you always want to make these graphics and any other graphics you create super clear and very readable. Don't use fonts that are, um, unreadable make, make sure they're large enough to read. A lot of people are nowadays are browsing from their phone. So you just want to make sure that all of your images are clear and readable.
Speaker 1: The text is large enough. It's not scratched. It's not smushed. It's not too close to the edge. Anything you create, you want to make sure that you are applying all of those basic graphic design principles. What would a website be without some multipurpose images? So most website copy is so much better receive and paired with an image that helps tell the story. Visually use these words, kinds of images on your homepage, sidebar sales, page, landing pages, opt-in pages, any kind of page that you have on your website that could use an extra little pizzazz. You can use images like these to help tell the story and connect with your dream viewers. Because as we're browsing online, people are looking for, for things to excite their eyes. We are visual creatures. So more images, the better as always don't overdo it. But whenever you have a chance to improve your website, copy, definitely think about adding in some of these different kinds of multi-purpose images.
Speaker 1: These are just a couple examples. There's, there's tons of different things that you can do image wise on your website. All right? So those are the, the most important images, but there are a few other images that you'll probably need to build a beautiful website that is cohesive for your viewers and provides them a good viewing experience. So you might have things like call to action images. If you have a lead magnet or freebie that you are using to collect email addresses, you can use these kinds of images on your homepage or in your sidebar. Um, speaking of sidebar, we have sidebar images. Your sidebar on your website is a great place to get people, to visit your blog or learn how to work with you or visit your shop. If you sell digital or physical products, your sidebar can be, um, a place where you put your recent blog articles.
Speaker 1: It can be used for a lot of different things. So you're going to want a couple of different images that you can use to drop into your sidebar. I love it. When people have a digital signature at the end of their blog posts, mine is shown down here at the bottom. I also use this as I sign off any email that I send to my email list. And then lastly, a favicon or fab icon. I'm not quite sure how to say it or what the proper way to say it is, but that is a teeny little icon that shows up on the tab of your internet browser. So you want to make sure that that is easily recognized. Um, a lot of the times you can use your logo icon for this. Just make sure that it's, it's easy to see, and it doesn't look like just like a little bug up in the tab, um, on any internet browser.
Speaker 1: So let's jump into creating visual content for social media. Again, you guys, consistency is key. I want you always, always, always use the same fonts, the same colors, images, and layout styles in every single image you create. I don't care what platform you are on or what you are creating images for. They need to be consistent. I want you to stop playing around and trying to come up with something new every single time being visually consistent, wherever you are showing up will amplify your visibility recognition and explode your know like trust factor. Here's an example of a really fun website that I follow and their colors are all always the same. The fonts are always the same. Everything that they do, you can tell has come from the same website. So whenever you see the dating divas, I think they are. Yeah, but, um, whenever you see these ladies online, you know exactly who they are and if you've already interacted with them in the past, you're more likely to interact with them again when you see them online.
Speaker 1: So social profile image and cover photos, we have all kinds of social media platforms and new ones happening all the time. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, tic-tac Twitter, LinkedIn, just to name a few, I think that's just about all of them, but your profile image and cover photo should compliment each other. So when somebody lands on your, say your Facebook page or your YouTube channel, you really want all of your brand consistency, your visual branding to shine, and you want them to feel very welcome. And like, they are really getting to know you and you can do this through, you know, great images, well-designed images on all of your social media platforms, images and cover photos. As you design social media images for engagement, make sure to always design images to the correct size for each platform. I know things are always changing. So for example, for the longest time, Pinterest recommended a 600 by 900 pixel pin image.
Speaker 1: Now they've changed it. They want a 1000 by 1500 pin image. So just keep up to date with the recommended images and sizes for each of these social media platforms, always, always, always use contrast and visual hierarchy to grab your viewers' attention. Remember contrast is what makes things interesting and get your viewers to look at what you have to say, add text and make your message clear and readable. Don't make your viewers struggle to see what you have to tell them. You want them to be able to look at your image and see it right away and quickly decide if they want to go further with you and your business and play around with animation and video, if the platform allows. So I'm a total Pinterest fanatic. And I have found that creating animated pins and pins with video get much more engagement than pins that are just static.
Speaker 1: So if a platform allows for video or animation, definitely give that a shot. Don't be afraid of it. It usually creates, creates a lot of interaction and catches your viewers attention much more than a static image. You always want to create a variety of image. This is going to keep your audience engaged with different styles of images and content. A couple examples are inspirational quotes, tips, and tricks, your latest blog, video or podcast. Maybe you want to showcase some client work or some personal snapshots of your personal life. I recommend creating a handful of templates for any category that you want to put on social media. So you always have something to pull from and a starting point for anything that you want to share. Lastly, this is so exciting. I love this technique. Use photos of you do not be shy. Your audience wants to get to know you incorporate photos of you.
Speaker 1: Yes. You to explode your personal branding and connect with your audience on an entirely new level. I don't know about you guys, but when I see somebody's face on a social media image or Pinterest image looking right at me, engaging with me, looking at me right in the face, I cannot help but be drawn to it. And then from there, I just want to know who this person is and how they can help me. What kind of content can they share with me that will help me be better as a person experiment with this technique, you can do it with your smartphone and Canva. It's super simple, but I really encourage you to kind of be the face of your brand and incorporate these photos of you into your graphics to really, really attract your audience on an entirely new level. So using branding and good design to generate traffic to your beautiful website is just the beginning.
Speaker 1: There's not much of a point if you're not converting your visitors into email subscribers, am I right? So let's talk about creating an irresistible lead magnet. A lead magnet is something you give away for free in exchange for an email address. They're also known as opt-in freebies and content upgrades. There's tons of different types of lead magnets. You can do checklists, worksheets, roadmaps, eBooks, or any other kind of digital download that you can think of. So once you've decided on the format of your lead magnet and have the content written, you're ready for the fun part. My favorite part, it's time to design your lead magnet. So here are a few things to keep in mind. The design of your lead magnet is just as important as the content of your lead magnet. If your lead magnet looks unprofessional, you'll have a harder time converting your website, visitors into email subscribers.
Speaker 1: Nobody's going to download something that looks like it was just slapped together. They want something that looks professional and the more professional it looks, the better chance you have of converting your website. Visitors. Let's talk about designing your lead magnet. Here are a few design tips that I have that are going to give you the most impact as you create your lead magnet. So you want to make sure all of your texts and elements are aligned properly, use hierarchy to help with formatting and readability. So if you have some different sections, you want to make those stand out with, you know, maybe a bold text or bigger text or a different font, create consistency across all pages in your document. Maybe you have the same footer. Um, maybe you have the same header. Maybe you have the same layout style throughout all pages of your document.
Speaker 1: And then of course use your visual branding elements in your lead magnet, fonts, colors, images. You want to stick with the same visual branding elements that you use across anything that you create for your online business. And lastly, don't forget the cover. Your cover is so important and it's an often overlooked part of creating a lead magnets. Your cover should have some relatable imagery. It needs to have a clear headline or title of your lead magnet, a supporting sub-headline that gives your audience more info. And then of course your logo or website URL, your cover is what you're going to use to promote the heck out of your beautiful lead magnet on your website, across your social media graphics and anywhere else that you are marketing yourself online. So do not skip this step. All right. So I know I have covered so much today.
Speaker 1: So let's recap all of these very important steps to growing your online business through design. So today you learn the very basic cliff notes of must know, graphic design principles. Make a point to understand the graphic design principles that are going to make the most impact. Always remember spark spacing, proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast each and every time you create a design. And then once you've got those principles down, go ahead and try some creative design techniques to help your graphics. Burkle, we've covered the elements of a visual brand and how it will positively impact your business and save you time. So I want you to gut check your visual branding. Are you using the same fonts, colors, images, and elements across all of your visual content? If not, I challenge you to start honing in and making some of these super important decisions. I also want you to think about where you can create some consistency across your graphics and where could you possibly simplify we've covered the essential images that you will need to create a cohesive website, sass, the visual aesthetic of your website.
Speaker 1: Is it consistent with your visual branding? Do you have all of the important images in place? So your viewers experience the best of what you have to offer in an organized way. We've talked about how to create consistency across your social media accounts, through design review, all of your social media accounts. Are they consistent across all accounts? Are you using your visual branding, fonts, colors, layouts, et cetera, update any images that don't check all of these boxes and make sure that you are applying all of the spark principles of design. Lastly, we've learned how to start and grow your email list with a well designed lead magnet. Opt-in freebie content, upgrade, whatever you want to call it. So if you have a lead magnet, make sure it's consistent with your branding, ensure that you have followed all of the spark principles. I want you guys to pay extra attention to repetition and, and alignment.
